Pigeon Forge, TN – October 2011 – Fall is in the air in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and new attractions and entertainment await visitors in this tourist-oriented town adjacent to America’s most visited national park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud
Axes are flying, chainsaws are roaring and lumberjacks are racing up 60-foot-tall poles at Pigeon Forge’s newest dinner show, the Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud.
Champion timber athletes, the ones you’ve seen compete on ESPN, are the attraction in this $10 million, 1,000-seat arena. There’s a story line about two families that are feuding over timber rights, creating a grand excuse to showcase professional timber athletes, log-pulling horses, tree-climbing comics, swimming dogs and even jousters in canoes.
Barbeque ribs, fried chicken and other picnic favorites are the meal you enjoy as the action unfolds.
The Smoky Mountain Opry’s Christmas Spectacular
A new holiday tradition begins Nov. 4 with the opening of the “Smoky Mountain Opry’s Christmas Spectacular.” The Smoky Mountain Opry Theater, formerly the Miracle Theater, will be home to a major production featuring singers, dancers, a live band, flying sugarplum fairies, fiber-optic costumes and . . . snow.
Outside the theater will be an extensive Christmas festival, “Christmasfest at the Opry,” with shopping, a stage for choral groups’ performances and a public ice-skating rink. The “Smoky Mountain Opry’s Christmas Spectacular” and “Christmasfest at the Opry” run through Dec. 31.
More Ice-Skating, More Music at Dollywood
The Ice Theater of New York, the nation’s premier ice dance ensemble, is at center stage – or perhaps center rink – in a new holiday show during Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Celebration (Nov. 5-Dec. 30).
In addition to the precision skaters, “Dollywood’s Christmas on Ice” includes six singers who perform a variety of Christmas favorites – “Snow,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “O’ Come All Ye Faithful” and many more – each featuring all-new musical arrangements.
Elsewhere in the park, you will see construction progress on the Wild Eagle, a $20 million steel wing roller coaster, the first of its kind in the U.S. It will open in 2012.
Groovin’ to Sounds of Motown
The newest production at the Grand Majestic Theater is a tribute to the greatest talents of Motown. The five-member “Soul of Motown” ensemble performs songs made famous by the Drifters, the Platters, the Four Tops, Smoky Robinson and others from the early years of Motown.
The show continues with a tribute to the Temptations and moves on to the Philadelphia sounds of the Stylistics. The song list includes “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “On Broadway,” “My Girl,” “Tears of a Clown,” “Betcha By Golly Wow,” and “Just My Imagination.”
“Soul of Motown” performances are Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and complement performances of “America’s Hit Parade” and “Masters of Magic.”
Marching for America’s Veterans
The Nov. 8 kickoff for Pigeon Forge Winterfest will have a new element – a parade honoring America’s veterans as an early salute to Veterans Day later that week.
Pigeon Forge Winterfest, a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event in the Southeast, is a four-month celebration that includes five million festive lights, the special Trolley Tour of Lights on Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys, Wilderness Wildlife Week in January and Saddle Up! in February.
